About the Department

The Department of History came into existence in 2021

Courses:

The Department of History, has absorbed the common pattern of syllabus under the UGC prescribed CBCS system. M.A in history, semester system 2 years course comprises 4semester, first year will be 1st and 2nd semester, 2nd year will be 3rd and 4th semester. The PG syllabus of history shall have a total of 1000 marks divided into 20 courses of 50 marks each. There are three types of courses on offer – 1. Core course, (CC), 2. Discipline specific elective course (DSE), 3. Generic elective course (GE). Each course of 50 marks shall be 4 credits each. The total number of core course is 12, total number of DSE is 6 and total number of GE course is 2 .

Assessment pattern: The evaluation process will be divided into two parts. The first part will be end tern examination of 40 marks. The second part will be internal examination of 10 marks. Internal examination may be carried out through assignment, class test, seminar presentation etc.

It is two years post graduation degree course. Every successful students will be provided a post graduate degree certificate after completion.

Thrust area in teaching and research of the department:

Socio-Economic and Cultural history, History of science and technology, Regional history, Gender history, History of medicine, Refugee history, Environmental history and world history.

  1. Teaching support: Understanding the history, emphasizing the development of writing skill and analyzing power, also understanding the new trends in history. Interdisciplinary approach, exploring innovative pedagogical method and technologies and also community engagement.
  2. Research support: Historical and cultural studies, writing dissertation paper, seminar presentation and near future faculty members will engage in complete research activities.

Major activities:

The department offers courses at post graduate level covers various historical events and topic sequentially.

Vision:

The Murshidabad university,erstwhile Krishnath College strives to become the primal educational institute of the district of Murshidabad. This,the university more than justified, The university that initiated its activities from july 2021 in its previous form was Krishnath College. The college was the most prestigious seat of learning in Berhampore,founded in 1853,some three years before the Calcutta University,under the auspices of Rani Swarnomoyee who named the college after her husband Raja Krishnath, has upleld the ideals of a holistic humane education ever since. This was part of project of renaissance in bengal coupled with the ideals of patriotism that marked the course of history of 20th century.Graced by the visit of Gandhiji, Subhas ch Bose and Radhakrishnan, the college has put forward an unmatched glory of developing the inviduals both in body and mind

The department of history was upheld and promoted the ideals of college and under present NEP 2020 regime, it pledges to ensure a holistic growth of individual.

Mission:

The mission of history department encompasses several key objectives. Department provides high quality education in history,teaching students critical thinking and deep understanding of historical events. The department of history promotes educational excellence,research, scholarship,interdisciplinary engagement, community engagement, public history,environmental history, professional development, global awareness and also recent trends in history.

Educational objective:

To create a life of awareness, fulfilment and responsible citizenship. A passion for learning about the past; enable them to gain a better understanding of the contemporary world and make connection to the future. Deep study of past using the particular skills of historical thinking.
