About the Department

This department came into existence in 2021.

Courses:

(i) B.A Honours & Program Course in Santali(CBCS Semester System)
B.A. Santali Honours Semester System(CBCS) Course in Santali will Comprise six semesters, first year will be 1st and 2nd semester, second year will be 3rd and 4th semester and final year will be 5th & 6th semester.

(ii) 4 Year Under Graduate in Santali as per NEP 2020 with effect from 2023:

Basic Features :

Undergraduate degree programmes of either 3 or 4-year duration, with multiple entry and exit points and reentry options, with appropriate certifications such as:

  1. UG certificate after completing 1 year (2 semesters with 40 Credits + 1 Summer course of 4 credits) of study.
  2. UG diploma after 2 years (4 semesters with 80 Credits + 1 Summer course of 4 credits) of study.
  3. Bachelor’s degree after a 3-year (6 semesters with 120 credits) programme of study.
  4. 4-year bachelor’s degree (Honours) after eight semesters (with 170 Credits) programme of study.
  5. 4-year bachelor’s degree (Honours with Research) if the student completes a rigorous research project (of 12 Credits) in their major area(s) of study in the 8th semester

Note : The eligibility condition of doing the UG degree (Honours with Research) is-minimum 75% marks to be obtained in the first six semesters.

  1. The students can make an exit after securing UG Certificate/ UG Diploma and are allowed to re-enter the degree programme within three years and complete the degree programme within the stipulated maximum period of seven years.

  4. Linguistic Studies : Learn the basic of linguistic knowledge through historical study of Santali language. Prepare the students with exceptional skills of problem solving, communication and leadership skills. Facilitate overall understanding of the requirements of the subjects. Prepare the students to provide professional solutions to real time problems. Student learn about Austric Language group, about Austric life style and culture
  5. Santali Grammar and Linguistic Theory : Investigating Santali grammatical works and linguistic theories, including the analysis of derivational morphology, syntactic structures, and linguistic universals.
  6. Digital Humanities and Computational Santali Studies : Leveraging digital tools, databases, and computational methods for S a n t a l i research, including text encoding, corpus linguistics, natural language processing, and machine learning applications.
  7. Translation and Transcription Studies : Examining the theory and practice of Santali translation and transcription, including issues of fidelity, creativity, adaptation, and cultural mediation in rendering Santali texts into other languages or media.
  8. Pedagogy and Education : Providing higher education institutions an important point of reference for designing teaching-learning strategies, assessing student learning levels, and periodic review of programmes and academic standards for Santali Literature (Honours) with shift from domain knowledge to processes of realising the outcomes, investigating innovative pedagogical approaches, curriculum development, and assessment methods for teaching Santali language, literature, and culture in academic and non-academic settings.

The main objectives of this department are:

  1. To save Santali language from obliteration.
  2. To educate young minds about the Santali culture and literature.
  3. To delve deep into the history of Santali language.
  4. To strengthen the roots of Santali tradition through literature.
  5. To make students familiar with the unique structure of Santali Grammar.
  6. To study and comprehend the sui generis of Santali literature.
  7. To acquire knowledge of the syncretism/ amalgamation/merging of the Santali language and Santali culture.
  8. The course will help the students to understand characteristics of Santali language in grammatical terms.
  9. The course will give the students a basic concept of Ol Chiki script in terms of reading and writing.
  10. The course will teach our students how to speak Santali language with accurate pronunciation.
  11. At the end of the course the students will be able to have a basic knowledge of Santali language.

The programme learning outcomes relating to BA (Hons) degree programme in Santali :

  1. demonstrate a set of basic skills in literary communication and explication of literary practices and process with clarity
  2. demonstrate a coherent and systematic knowledge of the field of Santali literature and Bhasha literatures in Santali showing an understanding of current theoretical and literary developments in relation to the specific field of Santali studies.
  3. display an ability to read and understand various literary genres and stylistic variations and write critically
  4. cultivate ability to look at and evaluate literary texts as a field of study and as part of the wider network of local and global culture
  5. demonstrate a critical aptitude and reflexive thinking to systematically analyze the existing scholarship and expand critical questions and the knowledge base in the field of Santali studies using digital resources.
  6. display knowledge to cultivate a better understanding of values – both literary values that aide us in literary judgment and also values of life at all stages; apply appropriate methodologies for the development of the creative and analytical faculties of students, their overall development of writing, including imaginative writing
  7. recognize employability options in Santali studies programme as part of skill development and as career avenues open to graduates in today’s global world such as professional writing, translation, teaching Santali at different levels, mass media, journalism, aviation communication and personality development

  9. to enable students to develop an awareness of the linguistic-cultural richness of India as an important outcome of Santal literary studies in India.

This programme will enable to have a comprehensive understanding of the history of Santali literature, its socio-political background, important movements, genres and authors, concepts and practices of literary studies, and basic skill for research writing. It is expected that the course will form the knowledge and skill-base for the students to take up various teaching assignments and pursue further research in the field.
